Wound Care Q & A

What is wound care?

Wound care includes medical services to support the healing of acute and chronic wounds. Without proper management, diabetic ulcers and other open wounds can lead to infections and other serious complications.

Third Coast Vascular provides comprehensive wound care services for adults with:

  • Pressure sores
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Radiation sores
  • Surgical wounds

The interventional vascular specialists offer basic wound care services in-office. They also provide customized care plans for diabetes, venous diseases, and other conditions contributing to chronic or non-healing wounds.

When should I schedule a wound care consultation?

Schedule a wound care consultation at Third Coast Vascular if you have wounds that haven’t started to heal within two weeks or that don’t heal completely within six weeks.

You may also need an evaluation if you have any wound that may not heal due to conditions like diabetes, a weak immune system, or poor blood circulation.

During your initial evaluation, the physicians examine the wound and may order diagnostic imaging tests to check for damage beneath the skin. They customize a treatment plan to support your wound healing and prevent infection and other complications.

What wound care treatments are available?

Third Coast Vascular offers several treatment strategies to ensure wounds heal fully. The physicians may need to clean out a new wound to remove debris and bacteria. They can also perform debridement to remove dead skin tissue around the wound.

Depending on the size and location of your wound, the physicians may apply clean bandages to keep the area clean. They can also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection. Other medications may be necessary to address the root cause of your wound. For instance, if you have a foot ulcer due to uncontrolled diabetes, you may need insulin to manage your blood sugar levels.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also available on-site. The office features a hyperbaric chamber that delivers pure oxygen greater than normal atmospheric pressure. Oxygen therapy increases stem cell, white blood cell, and growth factor production to support the formation of new skin cells so wounds heal faster and more efficiently.

Stem cell injections and other regenerative therapies may be needed to stimulate the growth of new skin cells.
